Social security denial - a journal of assistance

The Social Security system is in place to help us through difficult times. Unfortunately, there are some instances in which the system makes our lives even more difficult than they need to be. The day I received the denial letter for my claim, I wasn't sure what I was going to do. After talking with a few friends, I contacted a lawyer. That was the best decision I had ever made. Even with the professional assistance, getting the denial overturned and getting the money that I was owed took several months. I have kept a clear journal of my experience and loaded it with information that can help others get through what can be an impossible time.

3 Questions To Ask Your Worker's Comp Attorney Before You Hire Them

Alexis Garcia

Getting injured at work should not be a scary situation. When your employer is liable for injuries that occur in the workplace, you should be able to file a report, and soon after receive your worker's compensation payments to cover medical expenses and time off of work. Unfortunately, these cases are rarely ever cut and dry, and you will usually end up having to seek the professional guidance of an attorney to file a claim, which can definitely be scary. The key to getting through this frightening process is to find the right attorney to represent your case. Here are a few questions you should ask before hiring a specific worker's comp attorney for the task.

Has the attorney ever dealt with claims against your specific employer and had a successful outcome?

This question will not always apply. However, if you work for a large corporation, it is a well-known fact that your fight to win a worker's compensation case can be even harder. This is due to the fact that these larger companies will hire the best of the best to represent them because they can afford to do so. It is always a good idea to ask any attorney you are considering for your claim if they have ever represented someone against the corporation you work for and saw a successful outcome. While this is no guarantee you will also win your claim, it is helpful to know you have an attorney who is capable and familiar with battling a large entity through a case.

Is the attorney familiar with your type of injury or illness?

It is always helpful if your attorney has dealt with someone in a similar health situation as you in a worker's compensation claim. They will be able to better argue your stance in the claim because they will already be familiar with your struggles and symptoms. Plus, the attorney can usually recommend certain treating practitioners who are familiar with your condition so you can have a legitimate report of your ailments.

Is the attorney going to be doing the work on the case themselves, or will someone else have a hand in it?

This may seem like an odd question to ask, but it is really important. Some attorneys work with a full staff in their office who handle the majority of the interaction with clients. While this is okay in some situations, it can be better to have an attorney who is accessible when you have a lot of questions to ask.
