Social security denial - a journal of assistance

The Social Security system is in place to help us through difficult times. Unfortunately, there are some instances in which the system makes our lives even more difficult than they need to be. The day I received the denial letter for my claim, I wasn't sure what I was going to do. After talking with a few friends, I contacted a lawyer. That was the best decision I had ever made. Even with the professional assistance, getting the denial overturned and getting the money that I was owed took several months. I have kept a clear journal of my experience and loaded it with information that can help others get through what can be an impossible time.

Common Misconceptions About Hiring A Personal Injury Attorney

Alexis Garcia

So you've been injured due to someone else's negligence. Your first call should be to a personal injury attorney, right? Well, if you have heard some of the common misconceptions about personal injury attorneys and personal injury law, you might not do this immediately. And that's a problem because the sooner you call, the more a lawyer can do for you. To help make sure you make smart choices in this troubling time, take a look at these common misconceptions about personal injury law.

Hiring a personal injury attorney is expensive.

Your fear of expenses might keep you from calling a personal injury attorney. However, this stems from a misunderstanding of how personal injury lawyers receive payment from a case. They don't require payment upfront, and they only get paid if they win your case. If you win, they'll simply keep a pre-determined fraction of the funds you collect from the defendant.

Personal injury cases usually take years to settle in court.

It is true that this happens sometimes, but it is far from the norm. The majority of personal injury lawsuits do not even make it to court. What will likely happen is you and your lawyer will file a suit against the person or company that caused your injuries. That person or company won't want to go to the expense of hiring a lawyer (they do have to pay for a defense attorney). So, they'll offer to settle for a bit less than you're asking. For instance, if you are suing for $100,000, they may offer you $60,000 to settle out of court. Your lawyer can negotiate a little, maybe bringing the sum up to $70,000, and then the matter will be over within months.

Personal injury cases aren't important if your health insurance covers medical costs.

If you have good health insurance and only had to pay a few copays out of pocket, it can be tempting not to file a case. However, you should know that personal injury lawsuits collect a lot more than health care costs. They are also meant to cover lost wages, and pain and suffering. If you missed 6 months of work and will always have a limp, you deserve compensation for that, even if your medical bills were only $100. You gain that compensation by filing a personal injury case.
